Foro Ulpiano
The Forum ("foro" in Italian) was the public space in the middle of a Roman city. A gathering place of great social significance, it was often the scene of diverse activities, including political discussions, meetings, et cetera (wiki).Times changed and our Foro Ulpiano, facing the courthouse, is now a car park.
As the Romans would say: o tempora, o mores!

Skywatch Friday post (Borino)
The lonely boat moored on the Fratelli Bandiera jetty is the "Borino", the school boat of the Nautical Institute, a prestigious school founded in 1754. After years of activity, this 23-metre wooden boat is shortly to be dismantled. The Nautical students will remain on land as they wait for a worthy replacement.

Curtain of light
The windows of the General Registry Office are lit up by the sun as it is setting, and their reflection adorns the facade of a historic building.Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Ugo Guarino
This huge mural has adorned a hidden corner of the old town for many years now. It bears the signature of certain Ugo Guarino. And that's all I can tell you about it. I've found info on one Ugo Guarino, a painter, graphic designer and sculptor, who was born in 1927. In 1972, he began working with Franco Basaglia's team on the closure of the mental hospitals. Is it the same person? And what does this mural mean? Does anyone out there know anything about it? Can you quench my curiosity??Tuesday, August 25, 2009
The dog of Trieste
"El can de Trieste" (The dog of Trieste) is a famous song by Lelio Luttazzi.
Listen to the song
El can de Trieste
Xe tanti ani ormai
che son lontan de ti
vecia Trieste mia
son resta' solo e
gavevo voja de
voja de compagnia
alora Trevisan
ma ga' manda' un bel can
nato in un' osteria
pero' quel fiol de un can
quel fiol d'un can d'un can
el era sempre triste
no' l me fazzeva mai le feste
gnanca a mi
che so el suo paron
alora go manda' una cartolina
una cartolina de protesta
alora el mulo Trevisan me ga' risposto
el me ga' spiega' perche'
Solo davanti
aun fiasco de vin
quel fiol d'un can fa le feste
perche' xe un can de Trieste
perche' xe un can de Trieste
davanti
aun fiasco de vin
quel fiol d'un can fa le feste
perche' xe un can de Trieste
e ghe piasi il vin!
Da qualche mese in qua
a bever go impara'
come un facchin del porto
e in 'sta maniera so
che un giorno sentiro'
la mia campana a morto
ma chi se ne.... (pardon)
che i fazzi pur din don
se moriro' contento
perche' quel fiol d'un can
quel fiol d'un can d'un can
el xe cussi' beato
adesso me lecca come un mato
perche' spuzzo sempre piu' de vin
e so che'l me vol ben
che go' un amico
per la prima volta in vita mia
e a mi me basta un ano
de 'sta bela vita
e po' sara' quel che sara'....
Solo davanti
aun fiasco de vin
quel fiol d'un can fa le feste
perche' xe un can de Trieste
perche' xe un can de Trieste
davanti
aun fiasco de vin
quel fiol d'un can fa le feste
perche' xe un can de Trieste
e ghe piasi il vin!
e ghe piasi il vin!
e ghe piasi il vin!
e ghe piasi il vin!

Frati Minori
Church of the "Madonna del Mare dei Frati Minori" (1957).There's an interesting story about this church. The town council, in order to help the poor monks finish its construction, which was becoming a long dragged out affair due to a lack of funds, gave the congregation a lot of stone from old tombs which had been removed from the Sant'Anna cemetery. This is why the white stones, dotted up the pillars and on the facade, used to bear and some still bear the names and dates of a distant past.

Acquario (1)
On the evening of April 21 1933, the new town Acquarium was inaugurated, attended by the town's VIPs.The building was built alongside the Fishmarket so that the same water system could be used for both.
Still now the very same system is used for supplying water to the tanks: the water is pumped in from the end of the wharf with powerful pumps which drive it into two containers holding about 5000 litres each, placed at 10 metres above ground level, in the clock tower. It is then carried into the tanks along water ducts.
