Trieste boasts fifteen or so rowing clubs, five of which are over a hundred years old. The oldest was founded in 1863. So, as you can imagine, rowing is an important sport in the city. Some clubs are based right on the city's seafront, and so, as you stroll along the promenade, you may come across a rower as they slide their boat into the water for a training session.Today's photo is an archive photo shot at the beginning of the autumn when it was still warm enough to wear just a t-shirt, tomorrow I'll show you some rowers in action in the freezing winter gulf.

In many ways Trieste seems the neater version of Livorno, familiar but cleaner and more elegant...

Rowing is great exercise, but I can't imagine doing it in the winter in northern Italy. Back in the U.S. my wife once signed up our entire work group at the office for rowing lessons, thinking that it was going to be nice, easy, recreational paddling around in row boats or canoes. Of course it was competitive crew/skulling. Everyone enjoyed the challenge, except my wife dropped out after about two sessions.
I like the fact that the two hulls are 90 degrees to one another.
