side effect

One side effect of several days of strong Bora wind: plastic bags hanging from trees - they often remain there, in tatters, for over a year, till someone prunes the tree.

Emperor Franz Joseph

Emperor Franz Joseph I, c. 1915
Ludwig Michalek (1859 - 1942)
Charcoal on canvas
90.8 x 106.2 cm

On display in Palazzo Gopcevich until 1st April 2012 (U.S. Ultima Sigaretta Italo Svevo e il Buon Proposito)

This portrait shows the emperor working at his desk and smoking a Regalia Media, one of his favourite cigars, in a meerschaum cigar holder. The cigar holder meant that the emperor could smoke while he worked since it stopped the smoke getting in his eyes.

Altar

Although work has been carried out several times in the presbytery, the high altar in S.M.Maggiore is the same one erected by the Jesuits between 1672 and 1717.  The tabernacle is placed on the table-sarcophagus, between the statues of four Jesuit saints and two angels. It is embellished on the sides by two spiral volutes with two little angel statues and surmounted by a ciborium in red and white marble crowned by a little dome with the statue of the Risen Christ. Some features, such as the table-sarcophagus and the little door of the tabernacle in gilt bronze, were crafted by Austrians.

Leonardo Emilio Comici

Wooden statue dedicated to Emilio Comici, carved by the gardenese Tita Demetz in the 90s.

In Selva Gardena
a bronze model has been placed in front of the Campaccia climbing wall, where Emilio Comici lost his life in a banal accident.
Leonardo Emilio Comici (Trieste, February 21, 1901 - Selva di Val Gardena, October 19, 1940) was an Italian climber and speleologist. He accomplished many climbs in the eastern Alps, in particular in the Dolomites (opening approximately 200 new routes) and the Julian Alps.
