Where is our blogger?

Our fellow blogger, A, is missing in Iran. We post today in support of his freedom.

How much stronger would the impact be, if this were happening in my country and not a thousand miles away? Don't let indifference rule our lives.

Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber of Commerce headquarters is one of the most significant examples of Triestine Neoclassicism and one of the most remarkable architectural works of the golden age of the Free Port of Trieste.

The building is in the style of a Doric Greek temple, whose spacious portico has four large columns and a tympanum at the top.

Beethoven (Museo Revoltella)

As I was strolling through the lanes in CittĂ  Vecchia, the old part of town, I came across a small reproduction of one of the paintings I prefer out of those displayed in Museo Revoltella.

The original is by Lionello Balestrieri, who leapt to fame thanks to this large painting (420x202cm) when it won the gold medal at the Universal Expo in Paris. The following year, it was displayed at the 4th Biennale in Venice, where it was widely acclaimed. This is when it was purchased by Museo Revoltella.

The painting is based on the memory of an evening spent in the company of some bohemian friends in a Parisian attic flat, when the artist's friend Giuseppe Vannicola, a poet and musician, played the Kreutzer Sonata by Beethoven on the violin. In the picture, the painter is portrayed in profile sitting next to a young lady who gazes out at the viewer to get him involved in the pictorial scene.

Next time I visit the museum Revoltella, I'll post a photo of the original painting.

Railway station Campo Marzio

The former railway station in Campo Marzio, now converted into a museum.

The building was built between 1901 and 1906 and became the terminal station of the Transalpine Railway, which linked Trieste to the Austrian inland, branching off to reach Vienna and Salzburg.

The station still has four railway tracks: some have been cut off and are unused, others house locomotives and trams, and are exhibits in the museum collection.

In the foreground is the harbour office, behind lies palazzo Aedes, "the red skyscraper", which was inaugurated in 1926 and is the headquarters of the Generali Insurance company's workers' club. On the right, at the bottom of the Canal Grande, you can see the San Antonio Taumaturgo Church (1842).

Sala Tri*POP*vich

Formerly a coach station, this hangar-like terminal was converted into a theatre when the Verdi Opera House was undergoing restoration.
Today, a sizable group of Triestines organized via Facebook are suggesting that the Sala Tripcovich should be used for NON classical music, i.e. POPular music in all its forms.

What a great initiative!

Tergesteo (2)

Inside the Tergesteo Palazzo is a gallery which is open to the public; this relatively modern building presents this gallery in the style of the ancient Roman forums, with their covered crossroads where the ancient civilizations carried out their public life.

This photo is a few months old. Only part of the gallery is open at present, as work has begun to renovate the building.

Tergesteo

The Tergesteo Palazzo was built between 1840 and 1842 as a place for trade and where the local population could meet up and socialize.

The statue group standing on the facade overlooking Piazza della Borsa was sculpted by Pietro Zandomeneghi.

In the middle is the city of Trieste represented figuratively by the sea goddess Tetide, standing on a shell drawn by four horses rearing out of waves from the sea: the allegory of the sea on which the city's fortune is based is very clearly expressed.
