Bersagliere

3 November 1918 - the Bersaglieri (motorised infantry) disembark in Trieste.

The Bersaglieri are recognized by the distinctive wide brimmed hat that they wear (only in dress uniform in modern times), decorated with black capercaillie feathers. The feathers are usually applied to their combat helmets. Another distinctive trait of the Bersaglieri is the fast jog pace they keep on parades, instead of marching (wiki).

Day of the dead

On the hill of San Giusto, all around the castle, lies the Parco delle Rimembranze, built in the thirties. It is dedicated to the memory of those killed in war. The whole area is dotted with limestone rocks and on each of them is engraved the name of a soldier killed and the date he died.

Parovel Gualtiero, born on 11.4.1921 in Trieste, died at sea on 9.9.1943 when the Italian battleship Roma sank.

The Italian battleship Roma was an Italian Vittorio Veneto class battleship that served in the Regia Marina during World War II.
She was built in 1940.

Roma was sunk on 9 September 1943, one day after the Italian government surrendered to the Allies, by a German Fritz X bomb launched from a Dornier Do 217 aircraft. It was thus the first capital ship to be sunk by a guided anti-ship missile. More than 1600 lives were lost; only 596 survivors, most badly burned, were rescued.
