International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The first deportations from Trieste began on October 9, 1943. The elderly and the sick at the Jewish hospice "Pia Casa Asilo Gentilomo" in Via Cologna were deported on 20 January 1944. This stone was placed in the Hospice courtyard in their memory.

Entrance

If you want to travel through time, in Trieste there is a door to the trip you've always dreamed of.
Here's a link to street view so you can identify the location of the entrance.
Warning: pass through at your own risk, this blog does not assume any responsibility for anyone who does not return.
The exit is located elsewhere.

before and after

I took the first photo in September 30th 2008, when the old building in Via d'Azeglio had already been demolished and work on the construction of the new one had not yet begun.

I passed again a few days ago and a horrendous carpark was waiting for me.

Pilot ladder

(Zaule, Riva Alvise Cadamosto)

The pilot ladder (biscaggina o biscaglina in Italian) is a portable ladder consisting of two ropes between which are inserted sticks or planks that form the steps.
It serves primarily to embark and disembark the pilot when the ship is still offshore.

It is not there to help the commander of a ship flee from his sinking ship !!

Ivo Andric

Of everything that man erects and builds in his urge for living nothing is in my eyes better and more valuable than bridges. They are more important than houses, more sacred than shrines. Belonging to everyone and being equal to everyone, useful, always built with a sense, on the spot where most human needs are crossing, they are more durable than other buildings and they do not serve for anything secret or bad (The Bridge on the Drina)

Nazario Sauro

The bronze statue of Nazario Sauro by Trieste-born sculptor Tristan Alberti (1915-1966), was placed in front of the Trieste Maritime Station on the 50th anniversary of the death of Koper-born Nazario Sauro (1880-1916), an irredentist executed by the Hapsburg military authorities for high treason on August 10, 1916.
