Day of the dead

On the hill of San Giusto, all around the castle, lies the Parco delle Rimembranze, built in the thirties. It is dedicated to the memory of those killed in war. The whole area is dotted with limestone rocks and on each of them is engraved the name of a soldier killed and the date he died.

Parovel Gualtiero, born on 11.4.1921 in Trieste, died at sea on 9.9.1943 when the Italian battleship Roma sank.

The Italian battleship Roma was an Italian Vittorio Veneto class battleship that served in the Regia Marina during World War II.
She was built in 1940.

Roma was sunk on 9 September 1943, one day after the Italian government surrendered to the Allies, by a German Fritz X bomb launched from a Dornier Do 217 aircraft. It was thus the first capital ship to be sunk by a guided anti-ship missile. More than 1600 lives were lost; only 596 survivors, most badly burned, were rescued.

This is such a beautiful way to remember those who died. Something about a rock - all different - that says more than a cross. Your photo is very moving, Rob.

I agree with Jilly. This composition with the rose and the small bouquet on the side is very moving.

Great use of colour - I wonder who still leaves roses at the grave so many years later? Quite a story there I guess.

Hi-I came over from Skywatch. You have a beautiful blog here; I like the fall colors post a lot. But the sky picture didn't load (of course!)
